Course Design

Basically, these are Skill Enhancement Courses.
On arrival, the basic skills of the fellow are assessed and accordingly training module suggested for further skill enhancement.
The learning is stepwise.
Initial sessions are taken on Animal (Goat) Eyes in the Wet Lab; once a particular step is mastered in Wet Lab, the same is performed in OT.
The training is fully supervised and guided all the time.
In Cataract Surgery training, three options are available – ECCE, SICS, and Phacoemulsification.
The training includes theory, audio-visual aids as well.
The team of trainers is led by Consultant and includes Consultants and Fellows (who are qualified ophthalmologists).
The method of training is just like in any Medical College. However, it is important to note here that even today, many Medical Colleges
do not have such training facilities and they teach surgery directly on patients.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SURGICAL TRAINING PROGRAMS

Qualified Ophthalmologists possessing Diploma or Degree in Ophthalmology
Residents in Ophthalmology – 2nd year onwards
Valid registration or licence with respective medical council to practice in their own country

INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE HOSPITAL

Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital Nagpur is run by SMM Eye Welfare Charitable Trust.
It is a SINGLE SPECIALITY EXCLUSIVE OPHTHALMOLOGICAL INSTITUTE.
The Institute is NABH ACCREDITED and recognised Post Graduate Institute for DNB in Ophthalmology. Hence, periodic inspections are done by the authorities.
The 3-storeyed building is built on 12,000 sq. feet area.
Almost all Ophthalmic subspecialties are available under one roof.
The OPD has 8 Consultation rooms and 3 Refraction rooms – each equipped with all necessary gadgets for complete eye examination.
Specialised Ophthalmic Investigations available include – Perimetry, OCT, Fundus Camera, A-scan, B-scan, Topography, Specular Microscope, etc.
4 State-of-the-art Operation Theatres; all equipped with Operating Microscopes, 6 units of Phacoemulsification, and other surgical instruments.
All necessary equipment for Cataract Surgery, Keratoplasty, Refractive Surgery, Retina Surgery, Oculoplasty, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Glaucoma Surgeries, etc. are available.
State-of-the-art Wet Lab – equipped with Operating Microscopes, Phacoemulsification Machines, all instruments, etc.
