LASIK eye surgery is the best known and most commonly performed laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can be an alternative to glasses or contact lenses.
During LASIK surgery, a special type of cutting laser is used to change the shape of the cornea. The cornea is the dome-shaped clear tissue at the front of the eye.
In eyes with typical vision, the cornea bends — or refracts — light precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye. But with nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly. This incorrect refraction causes blurred vision.
Glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, but reshaping the cornea also provides the refraction needed to correct vision.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular laser vision correction surgery that reshapes the cornea to improve how light is focused on the retina. It is commonly used to treat nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
The procedure involves creating a thin flap in the cornea using a laser or microkeratome. A second laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue, and the flap is then repositioned, allowing the eye to heal naturally. The surgery typically takes 10-15 minutes per eye and is performed under local anesthesia (numbing eye drops).
Most patients experience improved vision within 24 hours, but full recovery may take a few weeks. Mild discomfort, dry eyes, or sensitivity to light may occur initially, but these symptoms usually resolve quickly. Patients should avoid rubbing their eyes, swimming, and strenuous activities for a few weeks after surgery.
