A symbol of simplicity, Dr. Vikas Mahatme is an eye surgeon of international repute. He is founder medical director of Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital Nagpur, which is a recognized Postgraduate Teaching institute run by S.M.M. Eye Welfare Charitable Trust. Started in a small single room in 1986, the hospital now treats nearly 55% patients FREE of cost. So far hospital has performed over 1 Lac 60 Thousand Eye operations out of which over 55000 operations have been done FREE of cost. The eye bank is performing actively in the region and offers cornea transplantation as well. Dr. Mahatme must be the only doctor to run eye hospitals at several places including Nagpur, Mumbai, Amravati, Melghat, Yavatmal, Gondia, Chandrapur etc.
