Mahatme Eye Bank & Eye Hospital Nagpur is run by S. M. M. Eye welfare charitable trust. The S. Mahatme Memorial Eye welfare charitable trust was formulated in the year 1986, registered under the Public trust Act, 1950 (Year 1950, Rule No. 29) at the office of Registrar of Public Trust, Nagpur bearing registration number E/1183/Nagpur.

The trust is a secular body with the aim of making world beautiful for the curable blindness. The Trust is envisaged on the vision of Dr. Vikas Mahatme, an ophthalmologist of great charitable fervor and a highly sensitive and motivated individual for the cause of the acute and unattended eye care needs in this part of the country.

During studies Dr. Vikas Mahatme came across large number of populace suffering from blindness which would have been cured if they could get the treatment in right time. Moved by the suffering of these human beings he undertook intensive social work in the field of eye care which became instrumental in the conceptualization of a comprehensive eye care institute to serve the masses or those who are poor.

A group of like minded people submerged with the zeal to serve the society and realizing the noble vision of Dr. V. Mahatme joined hands with him in formulating the trust.
